The impulse to displaying Art, in the metro, was first a political one. It was carried by the social Democrats in the late 1950s. They wanted Art to be accessible to the People, not just a happy wealthy few. With such impulse, they opposed long time belief that metro stations should first and foremost be functional. The Stockholm metro system (known as the Tunnelbana) has around 110 stops and bills itself as “the world’s longest art gallery” because over 90 of the stations have been meticulously painted by artists!
